Seven arrested in Ebonyi for killing kidnapped girl

Members of the Ebonyi Youth Assembly, a socio-political group in the state on Tuesday in Ikwo, near Abakiliki, apprehended seven suspects who alleegedly kidnapped and killed a seven-year-old girl.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the girl, a native of Agubia in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi, was allegedly abducted and killed by the suspects.

The National President of EYA, Mr. Chinedu Ogah, said the suspects had demanded N2 million ransom from the father of the deceased which he could not afford.

“We have handed the suspects over to the police. Our operations have been successful because we established strong intelligence gathering network in various communities across the state.

”This has made it possible for us to apprehend hoodlums with ease for enhancement of security in the state,” he said.

According to him, with the spread of the group in villages, wards and councils in the state, it was difficult for crime to be committed without notice.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Sylvester Igbo, confirmed the incident, commending EYA and the victim’s community for their effort.

“The suspects had abducted the girl, requested for ransom but later dismembered and dumped her body in a cassava farm in the area.

“Two of the suspects had confessed to the crime as the police had begun full investigation to ascertain the motive behind her brutal murder,” he said.

He said that observations by the police at the murder scene made them to attribute the killing to ritual murder and not kidnapping.

“This is because the victim’s corpse was without two legs, hands and eyes.

“One of the suspects confessed that his mother was the victim’s spiritual mother when she was baptised in a church,” he said.

He said that the suspects were from the victim’s town and that one of them claimed that he abandoned the gang immediately the abduction took place to avoid participating in the killing of the girl.
