North Carolina woman delivers baby before dying from car crash injuries

Expectant couple was rushing to hospital for delivery when car wrecked; mother-to-be Megan Riggans wasn’t wearing seatbelt, say police.

Megan Riggans was in labor and on her way to the hospital when a crash cut her young life short.

Doctors delivered her baby boy, but the 22-year-old died from her injuries before she could spend any time with him.

Her husband of four months, Brian, was rushing her to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital Sunday night when his car veered off the road, slamming into a tree, WGHP-TV reported.

Megan was not wearing a seatbelt when they crashed, Highway Patrol Trooper J.R. Zachary said.

She was unconscious at the scene and rushed to Alamance Regional Medical Center, while her husband, also 22, was taken to another hospital.

Doctors at Alamance Regional delivered Megan’s baby, but she was later pronounced dead.

The newborn boy was breathing and had a pulse, but his condition wasn’t known after he was brought to UNC Chapel Hill. Zachary told the Burlington Times-News the infant suffered from a lack of oxygen after the crash.
