A 31-year-old woman in Mexico has given birth to sextuplets, 12 years after she had quadruplets.

Due to complications, Salud Romero Ruiz from Michoacan had the four baby girls and two boys via Caesarean section at just 27 weeks into her pregnancy.

The Metro reports that the babies weigh as little as 590g (1lb 5oz) and are being treated in an intensive care unit in Morelia.

The Latin American Herald Tribune quotes hospital director Yara Pineda saying the babies are 'delicate' and underweight because of their 'lack of pulmonary development and because of all the complications associated with artificial respiration'.

Ms Pineda added that the medics caring for the tiny newborns were 'making every possible effort' to keep them healthy and to get them breathing by themselves.

Ms Romero's quadruplet pregnancy 12 years ago resulted in only two of her babies surviving. Astoundingly, she is not thought to have conceived any of her children via IVF.
