Armed men dressed in military uniform invaded a petrol station in Calabar on Friday, at about 10am and shot dead one of the attendants, Emeka Ugo.
The armed robbers invaded Anofobi Oil located at 67, Palm Street, Calabar, Cross River state, southsouth Nigeria, in a Volkswagen Audi car painted in blue colour which is the taxi colour in the state.
A source at the station told P.M.NEWS that the four-man robbery gang drove into the station and ordered everyone to get inside the office.
“Three of them came down while the driver remained inside the car and Emeka mistook them for one of the several task forces operating in Calabar and demanded to know which ministry they came from,” the source disclosed.
He added that Emeka refused to get inside until they told him where they came from and for his effrontery, the robbers shot him in the leg and still ordered him to get inside the office. When he could not move in, they shot him the second time and then shot him on the chest and he collapsed.
The gunmen carted away the day’s proceeds from the sale of petroleum products and drove away. After they had left, Emeka was rushed to a nearby hospital.
“When we took him to the hospital he was confirmed dead but the doctors operated on him and removed the pellets lodged in his chest before he was taken to the mortuary,” our source said.
The state police command spokesman, DSP John Umo confirmed the incident, adding that “the police are on the trail of the gunmen. We deployed our men there in the night but they came in the day, at about 10 am. We shall get them. There is no hiding place for them.”
