Nigerian Court Jails One-Handed Man For Stealing

An Osogbo Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 28-year-old, one-handed man, Aliu Adamu, to six months imprisonment after pleading guilty to a-four-count charge of stealing.

Adamu, who begged the court for leniency, said that his condition forced him to be stealing people’s property and promised to change.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Solomon Oladele, had told the court how the accused on Sept. 9 in Abija community, Osogbo, through the use of razor blades, scissors and other items, stole handsets from four houses.

Oladele said the accused stole three handsets belonging to Latifat Adeyemo, Jumoke Olagoke, and Ismaila Olanipekun from the houses which he burgled.

He added that but for the intervention of the community’s vigilance group, the accused would have made away with the stolen items, valued at N86, 500.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 411, 412, and punishable under section 390(9) and section 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap. 34 Vol. 11 Laws of Osun 2003.

The accused, who had no legal representative, pleaded guilty to all the four-count charge brought against him by the prosecutor.

Senior Magistrate Olusola Aluko, however, sentenced the accused to six months’ imprisonment that must run concurrently for the four-count charge.

The court also gave the accused an option of N2, 500 fine on each of the charges.
