(GIST)Police Nab 8 Suspected Kidnappers Of Enugu Varsity VC, Prof Cyprian Onyeji

The police in Enugu recorded a major breakthrough today with the arrest of eight suspected members of a kidnapping gang that abducted the vice chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology,ESUT, Professor Cyprian Onyeji.


Members of the criminal gang were said to have been arrested after a heavy gun duel between them and officers of the state police anti-kidnapping squad who stormed their hideout at Safety hotel located along Uwani axis of the state following a tip off.

The arrest in the early hours of today was preceded by the nabbing of three members of the gang namely: Osinachi Iheanacho, Ejike Aba and Obinna Okoro who were picked up from a commercial bus at Agbogugu axis of Awgu along the Enugu -Port Harcourt expressway at about 4pm on Tuesday.The arrested three thereafter confessed that their gang leader and other members had arrived earlier from Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The trio later, precisely at about 1.30am local time today led operatives to Safety Hotels at Uwani area of Enugu where five other members of the group namely: Ezebilo Ihiemere a.k.a Gago, Ifeanyi Kingsley Edeh, Ani Chidiebere,Udeonu Ernest and Chibuzor Eze were arrested after some exchange of gunfire while one Chiboy who sustained gunshot injury escaped through the roof top of a three storey building.

The state police spokesman, Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed the arrests said that the suspects have already provided details of their involvement in the kidnap of ESUT VC few weeks ago.

He said items recovered from the gang include a Volkswagen Vento car with registration Number AQ 780 BRS in which two sun glasses identified by one of their victims who was on hand to see things for himself as his own, two Ak-47 riffles and five loaded magazines with 52 rounds of ammunition.
