The statement, signed by the Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Frank Mba, said the 14 were set free after they were screened and found not culpable of any crime, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
It explained that the other 13 deportees who were incriminated, had been handed over to relevant agencies, based on the nature of their alleged criminal involvement.
“The Nigeria Police Force, on August 10, 2012, at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, received 27 Nigerians deported from Madrid, Spain, for various criminal offences, ranging from armed robbery, drug trafficking, forgery and illegal migration.
“They were immediately transferred to the office of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Lagos, where they were screened to determine their culpability in the allegations against them.
“At the end of a meticulous and painstaking screening exercise conducted by a combined team of officers from the Police, SSS, NDLEA and the Nigerian Immigration Service, 14 of the deportees were found, not culpable for any of the alleged crimes.
“They were subsequently, unconditionally released to their relations on bail,” it said.
It named the deportees as Osatohamwen Uyigue, Patrick Owiyi, Eboigbe Courage, Ani Obinna, Peace Ugue, Ugwa Ikanize and Moses Salifu.
Others are Loveth Emonvon, Osas Oduware, Festus Enabulele, Godspower Eigbedion, Chuks Etumudor, Oghogho Osawanye and Anthony Umeh.
The statement said that eight of the indicted deportees were handed over to the Nigeria Immigration Service, three to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and two to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Force CID Annex, Abuja.
They are Adam Garba Ames, Ahmed Zim Atando, Hassan Idris, Victor Kamar, Mosa Sidi, Aloysius Chukwuanu, and Charity Ekuase (Immigration); Julius Maikel, Darlington Chinonso and Asiuloka (NDLEA); and John Omoputa and John Okpara (Police).
