Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State gave out the sum of N1 million to six chairmen of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to a report by Channels TV who also captured the speech on camera, the Governor offered the huge sum to the six chairmen from the South-South geopolitical zone who had converged in Port Harcourt for a party reconciliation session.
Akpabio’s action was said to have followed an observation made by the Delta State Govenor, Emmanuel Uduaghan who was quoted as saying, ‘If you want to prevent our members from straying to other parties, you must put food in the stomach of our supporters’.
As a means of dousing the tension and fear of party chairmen defecting, Akpabio, in his speech, responded thus, ‘My brother Governor, Uduaghan, said our members are hungry and that we must put food in their stomach so that they don’t stray to other parties. I am giving all the state chairmen of the party N1 million each for Mr Biggs. Our members must not be hungry’.
The Governor has in the past been criticised for the ‘careless spending’ of the State’s funds. Barely two weeks ago, his donation of a Toyota Prado SUV to pop star 2face and Annie Idibia and the promise of taking a 29-man delegation to Dubai for the celebrity wedding of Annie and 2face had come under severe criticisms.
