Osezua Osolase, 42, tricked poverty-stricken Nigerian orphans into travelling to the UK with the promise of a better life. But the young victims were raped, sexually abused and subjected to voodoo-style rituals by a child trafficking ring.

The approach may crack the problem of yo-yo dieting where women meet their target - but regain lost weight within weeks

They say practice makes perfect – and it seems that applies to dieting and staying trim.

Women who did a practice run before they started losing weight were better at keeping the pounds off, a study has suggested.

The approach may solve the problem of ‘yo-yo dieting’, in which  slimmers regain lost pounds.

Researchers believe the secret of  avoiding weight gain is making small, quick adjustments to eating habits before beginning a diet.

The study looked at 267 overweight or obese women who either started a weight loss regime immediately or spent eight weeks learning ‘weight maintenance’ skills before starting.

They were also encouraged to weigh themselves daily to see how different eating patterns affected their weight.

After both groups completed their 20-week weight-loss period, which included exercise and eating  more fruit and vegetables, all  the women lost about 17 pounds on average.

However, a year later the diet-training participants had regained only three pounds on average, compared with a seven-pound regain for the group that started without training.

Michaela Kiernan of Stanford University School of Medicine, in California, said: ‘Those eight weeks were like a practice run.

‘We found that waiting those eight weeks didn’t make the women any less successful at losing weight.

Ripples of Hurricane Sandy may hit Lagos within a week - Govt

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday warned residents of the state to prepare for the ripple effect of Hurricane Sandy in the state.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Development and Infrastructure, Mr. Adesegun Oniru, said the government was projecting that within seven to 14 days, the state would experience the ripple effect of the hurricane in its coast lines.

Former Director General, Centre for Democratic Studies, Prof. Omo Omoruyi, has cried out that his friends have abandoned him when he needed them most.

The political scientist who was on Monday flown abroad following his worsening health lamented that even the former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, who appointed him as CDS DG, and some of his friends have abandoned him.

Speaking in Benin City, Edo State, before his depature to the United States, Omoruyi appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan and other well meaning Nigerians to help him at this trying time.

Hajj 2012: Death toll of Nigerian pilgrims rises to 21

The death toll of Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia has risen to 21 from 14, a week before the Hajj rites, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN quotes the National Hajj Commission’s weekly public health bulletin “No one’’ dated Oct. 29, which showed that the male pilgrims had the highest mortality rate of 13.

The bulletin shows that Katsina State has the highest figure of four; Sokoto, three, Kano, Lagos, Zamfara and Ogun recorded two deaths each.

Oyo, Gombe, Yobe and the Nigerian armed forces recorded one death each.

It also stated that 53 patients had been referred to Saudi hospitals with 39 cases recorded in Medina, four in Jeddah and 10 in Mecca.

The bulletin states that 90 per cent of the patients had been discharged.

London Metropolitan Police confirms arrest of Governor Ajimobi’s wife

London Metropolitan Police has confirmed the arrest of Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, wife of Oyo state Governor, over money laundering.

The Met confirmation came this afternoon following an enquiry by P.M.NEWS on the story making the rounds that Mrs. Ajimobi was arrested in London, with the sum of 400,000 pounds and thousands of US dollars, valued at N500million.

The Met simply said ‘Yes’ to our question, seeking confirmation about the arrest.

However, the organization declined to give further information about the matter, citing a UK law.

“I am sorry, we are unable to disclose any information to you under the Data Protection Act,” an officer in the MET Lambeth Office responded.

There was anxiety in the government circles of Nigeria’s Oyo State this morning over the arrest of Mrs. Ajimobi.

Actor Enebeli Elebuwa getting better in Indian hospital

The veteran actor who was stricken by stroke late last year, is currently in India receiving treatment. He was flown to India a few weeks back by the Delta State Government through its Commissioner of Culture, Richard Mofe Damijo. Elebuwa said recently via a telephone interview with a reporter that he's getting better and is now able to stand unaided for a few minutes for the first time since the illness started late last year.

Mercy Johnson is about seven months pregnant but that hasn't slowed her down one bit as she's said to be moving from one movie location to another. What movie producers and marketers now do is write scripts that suit her condition - that of a pregnant woman.

22 year old domestic worker found dead in his boss' swimming pool

22 year old Onyeka Kingley Raphael (pictured above) was found dead in the bottom of a swimming pool in the home he worked as a domestic help. His body was removed early Saturday morning from a house on Babatunde Asimi Street, Ogudu GRA. 

His family, suspecting fowl play, has petitioned the police, asking for a thorough investigation because when Kingsley's body was removed by policemen from Ogudu police station, eye witnesses said there were no visible injuries on his body except a twisted neck, suggesting that the domestic worker may have been strangled before being dumped in the pool.

The popular Nollywood actors visited flood victims in Delta State over the weekend. The governor of the state, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan explained to newsmen why he invited the actors to meet with flood victims.

"I went to the flood victims camp one day and as I walked in, half of the population were watching TV. I tried to attract their attention. Some looked at me and greeted me, but they turned to continue watching the television. When I looked at the television, I saw it was Aki, Paw Paw and Ibu that they were watching. You see, because they were watching Aki, Paw Paw and Ibu, they forgot their pains. For them, these Nollywood actors were helping them to ease their pains. That was why I invited them to go to the different camps as motivational speakers because the victims require a lot of motivation, while they are preparing to go back home.”

Super storm hits U.S

At least 50 million people are bracing for the worst storm forecasters say could be the largest ever to hit the United States. 

Hurricane Sandy is expected to hit the East Coast at 8:50 this evening, and will bring that part of the country to a standstill in the next few days with battering winds, flooding and lengthy power outages.
