It was a day of high emotions at Anfield. Even Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez, out their spat behind, as the first game to be played at the stadium, after the Hillsborough report, kicked off.

And it was Liverpool, who put sentiments aside and dictated the early exchanges in the game. Suarez and Sterling, caused the United’s defence all sorts of trouble, but could not find the back of the net. All that changed shortly before the half time whistle, as Jonjo Shelvey, was dismissed for a tackle on Johnny Evans. Replays show that Mark Halsey, might have just been harsh on the midfielder.

However, the home side took the lead early in the second half, through Steven Gerrard. United equalised almost immediately, through a curling effort from Rafael.

Brendan Rodger’s men had calls for an obvious penalty turned down, before Halsey awarded United a spot kick seven minutes from time. And although Pepe Reina got a hand to Van Persie’s kick, the pace and power was too much.
