One Janet Udegba, 35, of Ikotun, Lagos has come forward with a gruesome, heart-wrenching account of the life-threatening ordeal she was put through by her so-called husband. According to Janet,
the malevolent man (identified as Kehinde Adesamuye, 39) set her on fire because he was angered by the rapport she has with her male friends. The incident took place at Janet’s stall, where she sells cooked noodles. Apparently, the jealous man came there to confront her, and in his rage bathed her in kerosene and promptly set her ablaze.
My husband has always been jealous. He used to beat me every time, under any guise and excuse… I’ve tried several times to leave him, but he always threatens to harm me. I stayed with him because I was afraid of him and my life. He always told me that I could never escape from him, except I leave Lagos State. Anytime I said I was leaving him, he would say, no problem, but that he would do something to me which I would not forget. Now, see what he had done to me. He wanted to kill me,” Janet said, under great emotional duress.
This is not one of those cases that should be swept under the carpet. Spousal abuse is wrong and Adesamuye should be brought to justice fast.
