An Idaho man who admitted to recruiting strangers on Craigslist to rape his wife was released from jail Tuesday after more than a month in custody.
Justin Matthew Crawford, 32, was arrested in July when police discovered he had placed ads online soliciting men to break into his house and sexually asault his wife.
Police were called to the couple’s home around 2 a.m. on July 13, where Crawford’s wife said a strange man had shown up at her door, forced his way inside and tried to sexually asault her.
She grabbed her 9mm handgun and got into a struggle with the intruder, in which a shot went off and caused him to flee.
Crawford himself was not home at the time.
Police officers launched an investigation into the incident and were trying to find the man responsible when they received another call from the woman the next day, stating the same thing had happened again but this time she was holding the intruder at gunpoint.
But when the man was questioned by police, he said he was simply following orders.
"He said that he was responding to an ad on Craiglist that was from a woman who wanted someone to come and rape her - it was one of her fantasies, was what the ad said," police spokesman Josh Palmer told the Daily News.
Police traced the ad back to the woman's husband, Justin Matthew Crawford, and were able to confirm it was linked to him by evidence found on his phone.
He was ordered to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.
Crawford is a staff sergeant in the Idaho National Guard, who served in Iraq in 2004 and is reportedly still on full-time duty.
County prosecutor Grant Loebs told the News that Crawford is due back in court soon for his formal arraignment, though the date has not yet been set.
