Empire State building shooter Jeffrey Johnson spent free time bird-watching in Central Park

A fellow bird enthusiast snapped a picture of Johnson wearing a grey suit similar to the one he wore on Friday, strolling through the park with binoculars.

Jeffrey Johnson uses binoculars to search New York’s Central Park for the young offspring of a popular red-tailed Hawk that local birdwatchers know as Pale Male.

His best friends were feathered.

The twisted loner who killed an ex-colleague near the Empire State Building spent his free time bird-watching in Central Park, where he snapped photos of hawks and other local wildlife.

In a photo taken by a fellow birding enthusiast, Jeffrey Johnson is seen peering through binoculars while wearing a grey suit — an outfit similar to the one he wore during Friday’s killing.

Johnson wrote tenderly about his hobby to a fellow bird watcher who works for The Associated Press, describing a winter night spent with ducks in the park.

“Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little ‘flotilla’ of Mallards swimming and softly honking ... fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable,” he wrote.

The 53-year-old former Coast Guard petty officer regularly posted pictures of the park’s hawks on blogs that tracked the birds.

Just two months ago, he was following one of the offspring of the well-known local red-tail hawk dubbed Pale Male. Johnson lived alone in an apartment just a few blocks east of the park.

Neighbors described Johnson as a quiet man who kept to himself and never entertained guests.
