Niger State governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, yesterday declared that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) saw it ldefeat at the general election coming, but could not do anything about it. This is just as he also described the emergence of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as a good omen for democracy.
According to him, the development had brought the one party system in operation in the country to an end. Aliyu, who spoke on Friday at a lecture during the 24th convocation ceremony of the Federal
University of Technology, (FUT), Minna, said: “Many of us saw it coming before the elections, but nothing was done.”
Speaking shortly after a lecture delivered by Hon Justice Legbo Kutigi, titled: ‘The role of Law in the Enhancement of Socio-Economic Growth of the Nation’, he hinged the defeat of the party on the one term agreement over which he was nearly crucified.
He said, however, that the outcome of the elections had proved his critics wrong. Aliyu further stated that corruption had eaten deep into the fabric of the nation in different spheres.
He said, corruption was not only in government establishments, but even in homes. The governor then noted the need for the devolution of powers, insisting that politics was about bringing growth and progress to the society and not about self enrichment as witnessed in the country.
Also, the Pro-Chancellor of FUT, Minna, Prof. Ahmed Alkali, in his remarks stated that the nation is currently at a crossroads because 2015 is a year of political transition.
According to him, “If Nigeria must fight corruption, we must all check ourselves to ensure that at all levels we kill corruption. Anything we do in excess is corruption”.
