A construction worker in Malaysia escaped with his life after a bathroom break landed him in the jaws of death.
The 32-year-old Indonesian laborer, known as Pai, was attacked by a six-and-a-half-foot crocodile Friday by the banks of the Sungai Santubong river near the eastern Malaysian city of Kuching.
Pai was at work on a new bridge when he ran to the river to relieve himself after a stomach ache struck.
"A two-meter-long crocodile suddenly pounced out of the water and bit me in the waist,” Pai told The Star newspaper.
Pai said he fought for about 10 minutes to free himself from the reptile, which tried to pull him into the water.
"After being freed from the jaws of the crocodile, I found extraordinary strength to run and call for help even though my waist was extremely painful," the Malay tabloid Harian Metro quoted Pai as saying.
Pai's fellow workers rushed him to the hospital, where he was reported to be in stable condition with puncture wounds to his ribs and waist.
The workman said his digestive distress caused him to forget about the crocodiles that he and his co-workers have noticed in the river on other occasions.
The aquatic attack was the second in the city in as many days. On Wednesday a 14-year-old boy survived an attack by a crocodile at a beach about 30 miles from where Pai was struck.
