Commercial motorcyclist arraigned for biting policeman


A commercial motorcyclist, Sanjo Somodiya, on Monday appeared before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos charged with assaulting a policeman.


Somodiya, 20, who is facing a one-count charge of assault, however, pleaded “not guilty,” the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr. Adegoke Akinlebi, told the court that the defendant, who resides at No. 42 Akinrinlo Street, Somolu, Lagos committed the offence on August 23.

Akinlebi said Somodiya assaulted the policeman, CPL Jimoh Omiyi, and bit him on the chest, while resisting arrest.

The incident occured during a raid on a black spot at Akinrinlo junction in Somolu.

According to the prosecutor, the raid by policemen at Akinrinlo junction followed a tip off by residents of the area.

He said, “The accused was one of the many, who where smoking marijuana at the spot that night.

“The police caught him, and he attempted to free himself. He then assaulted the policeman, giving him a bite on his chest and tearing his shirt.”

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Code Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs. Bola Osunsanmi, granted the defendant bail for N50,000 with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case to September 21 for trial.
