26-year-old man in Abuja beats up mother for not cooking for him


The Police on Thursday arraigned one Chima Eke, 26, of Tudun Wada in Lugbe, Abuja, before an Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court for allegedly beating up his mother.


The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Jeremiah Elijah, told the court that the case was reported at the Lugbe Police Station by Mrs Lovina Eke of the same address on Aug. 19.

Elijah said that the accused came home only to discover that his mother had not cooked food for the day.

The prosecutor said the development infuriated the accused and he resorted to beating up his mother, an offence which contravened the provisions of section 265 of the Penal Code.

He said that during police investigations, the complainant pleaded with the police to assist her enforce the relocation of the accused to his father’s residence at Suleja in Niger.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Counsel to the accused, Mr Okwudili Nwator, asked for Eke’s bail based on the provisions of section 340(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code and section 36 (5) of the 1999 Constitution.

Senior Magistrate, Aliu Shafa, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 with a surety in like sum who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

The magistrate adjourned the case to Sept. 4 for further hearing. (NAN)
